Handheld Gen 2 Reader by Tracient Technologies

The Padl-R UF handheld reader by Tracient Technologies (www.tracient.com) solves the problems often associated with handheld UHF readers. Stylish and ergonomic, the Padl-R UF can be connected quickly to any Bluetooth enabled device (PDAs, cell phones, smart phones, PCs, laptops) thus giving these devices rapid RFID capability. When matched with a company 's existing PDAs (for example Psion Teklogix, Motorola, Intermec, Datalogic), Tracient's Padl-R gives them RFID capability for only $1,700. When matched with new low to middle tier PDAs or smart phones currently on the market, for example iPAQ, i-mate, the reader provides a mobile RFID solution for under $3,000. And only 190 grams, the reader is ideal for all-day use.

Tracient have designed the Padl-R UF for mobile applications such as inventory taking, asset tracking, and mobile field service. Specific market verticals are expected to include apparel, footwear, healthcare, postal, courier, and pharmaceutical. It operates at 855-960 MHZ and has a typical read range of 1.5m.

There has been significant interest in the Padl-R UF already with companies in Spain, Italy, China, Singapore, Canada, U.S., and Mexico evaluating samples for a variety of apparel and asset tracking applications.

Tracient expects the Padl-R UF will consolidate its position as a market leader in Bluetooth handheld RFID readers. As well as the above differentiators, Tracient's detailed and robust software mean the readers are fast and easy to connect, and fast and easy to integrate. The reader comes bundled with Tracient's TraceConnect™ SDK, which contains software applications enabling rapid use of the reader straight out of the box. For more complex situations, Tracient supplies sample source code files that can be used to modify and develop proprietary software.

Datasheets, product information, and purchase information for the reader and Software Development Kit can be found at

Magellan Technology Announces DNA/Specimen Tracking Applications

Magellan Technology (www.magellan-rfid.com) announces its new RFID reader with PJM StackTag ® technology, which has been specially designed to enable hospitals and laboratories to easily and accurately track multiple DNA and other slide specimens that are stacked or stored very close together with little or no space between the slides.

The new RFID reader has been specifically developed to take advantage of Magellan 's unique PJM (Phase Jitter Modulation) StackTag technology, which complies with the international standard ISO/IEC 18000-3 Mode 2, and has the ability to reliably communicate with RFID tags even when they are stacked, touching, or overlapping each other without any separation.

As many as 1,000 microscope slides can be read in a few seconds with Magellan's new RFID reader, providing hospitals and laboratories with an easy and efficient way to catalog and track the thousands of specimens they have to store, often for many years. The 13.56 MHz HF technology inherent in Magellan 's reader is ideally suited for difficult environments such as tissue samples and items containing liquids.

"Our solution allows substantially more flexibility for the suppliers of DNA test kits to universities, hospitals, and government agencies than any other RFID systems currently available, " explains Ken Laing, Magellan Technology's Vice President, Sales and Marketing. "With Magellan's PJM technology, it's not a problem when the tags on two different DNA samples touch and as a result, many more samples can be stored on the shelves or in the cabinets. In fact, the savings in time and labor combined with the fact that hundreds if not thousands of samples can be stored more compactly, once again demonstrates Magellan's commitment to identifying applications that until now could not effectively or reliably use RFID. "

Magellan's new RFID reader contains a full embedded RFID Operating System so that it can be directly connected to the IT network using Ethernet or USB. The reader is ROHS-compliant and fully certified for CSA/UL, FCC, CE, Australia, and Canada.

Reva Expands Successful TAP Product Family

Reva Systems (www.revasystems.com) announces the general availability of a new Tag Acquisition Processor (TAP) model. The Reva TAP 331 is an entry-level platform that brings cost effective RFID network infrastructure to facilities operating between one and eight RFID readers encompassing as many as 32 readpoints per site. The new TAP 331 and the existing TAP 701 models are both fully compatible with Reva 's Management Console (RMC) software, allowing enterprises to deploy RFID infrastructure across all facilities while maintaining a single management solution for all RFID configuration and monitoring.

Reva's TAP family of products and accompanying software tools enable scalable deployment of RFID for production operations in any industry and produce the accurate, actionable data that enterprises need to deliver ROI from RFID implementations. Reva TAPs are deployed at a facility level to control all the RFID readers at each site, optimize reader performance as a system, process collected tag data to determine accurate locations, and eliminate cross-reads. Reva TAPs simplify RFID installations by automatically serving only useful RFID information to enterprise applications through a range of industry-standard interfaces while providing the management and reliability necessary for sustainable RFID operations.

The TAP 331 is ideal for small sites with no IT support such as retail outlets, transportation and logistics monitoring points, supplier shipping docks, branch offices, satellite processing centers, and temporary operations. The appliance has already been installed at hundreds of customer sites globally. METRO Group is using TAP 331 models in retail store locations throughout Germany as the basis for RFID supply chain applications in the first phase of their global rollout.
