SMART SHELVES

Blue Vector Shows Smart Shelf Cabinet

Blue Vector (www.bluevector.com) has partnered with McKesson (www.mckesson.com) – a provider of supply, information, and care management products and services designed to reduce costs and improve the quality of healthcare. In an effort to improve operational efficiencies at McKesson, Blue Vector will control the operation of RFID and other types of sensors in McKesson’s forward distribution center and manage the flow of information to existing McKesson software applications.

The first collaboration was the use of secure storage and dispensing cabinets that provide both case and item-level RFID tracking of Pfizer products. These cabinets are controlled by Blue Vector’s Edge Manager Appliance (EMA), offering remote Web management and easy plug-and-play integration with the rest of McKesson’s automation network. There are two sections inside the cabinet for bulk and open stock. It automatically tracks the products going in and out of it. It uses the UHF frequency for cases and the HF frequency for item-level products. The cabinet houses one UHF reader with two antennas and one HF reader with 15 antennas. Its overall dimensions are 87" high by 40.5" wide by 23" deep, and its cubicles are 12" high by 15" wide by 14.5" deep.

Venture’s HF/UHF Smart Shelf Cabinet

Venture Research Inc.’s Smart Shelf Cabinet combines HF and UHF RFID technology to provide accurate tracking of cases and items placed within it. Accurate transactions are performed and inventory is automatically updated. The cabinet contains over 16 custom antennas to ensure accuracy of tag reading regardless of orientation. Additional software provides complete data acquisition control over the contents of the cabinet with real-time event triggering and automatic inventory capture.

All cases and items in the cabinet are counted continuously to ensure no tampering of the product occurs. Sensors on the door record access to the cabinet and an optional personnel badge scanner assigns the access to the personnel approaching the cabinet. All access events are recorded to provide a complete security log of personnel usage. A secure locking front door with a proximity alert insures only authorized personnel can access the cabinet.
