PRINTERS

Web-Enabled Intelligent Printers

Sato Corporation announces the availability of its speed-enhanced GTe series of industrial printers, available in direct thermal or thermal transfer configurations. Says the manufacturer, the GTe is the most intelligent printer in its class. Featuring Sato’s Embedded Basic Language (SEMBL), it offers users the flexibility to create and load customized standalone programs into the printer. With SEMBL, GTe can interface with external devices such as a keyboards, barcode scanners, scales, or input/output modules directly, as well as process received data in standalone mode, without any connection to an external PC, says Sato.

Print output speed is rated at 12" per second at 305-dpi resolution. An automatic detection system detects any printhead change, says the company, adding that this feature provides users the option of selecting and subsequently changing the print resolution based on evolving needs and requirements. Printheads are available in 203-, 305-, and 609-dpi configurations. With the 609-dpi printhead installed, smaller-size 2-D codes such as Micro PDF417, Maxicode, and Datamatrix are produced with excellent legibility and consistency, ensuring high read-rates, says Sato.

Optional interface modules include a serial communication module, parallel communication module, USB connectivity, and wire/wireless LAN (802.11b) support. The GTe printers are also equipped with WPC Plus (Web-based Printer Control Plus), Sato’s new tool for controlling thermal transfer barcode printers via any Web-enabled wired or wireless device.

Barcode Label Printer Integrates RFID Data

Cognitive Solutions is showcasing its RFID-equipped thermal printers. The company has incorporated RFID technology into the Advantage LX printer platform without sacrificing price, performance, reliability, and ergonomics. The RFID barcode label printers provide an integrated solution for traditional barcode labeling and RFID tag writing, say company officials. Using an RFID label, the printer can simultaneously write RFID data and print a barcode label; the printer is not limited to performing both operations simultaneously, and can perform either operation independently. The Advantage LX offering prints both direct thermal and thermal transfer labels and tags in a host and network system, or in a standalone keyboard or scanner input device system. The printers output at a speed of 3" per second and at a resolution of 101 or 203 dpi.

Thermal Printers Add RFID Capability

Toshiba Tec announces the addition of RFID capability to its B-SX range of thermal printers. To be able to meet various standards and frequencies, the company is offering the ability to use different readers and antenna on the same model. Says Toshiba Tec, the B-SX range of printers provides users with an upgrade path to RFID read/write capability for both UHF and HF applications. The printers do not have pre-fitted RFID read/write units, so that they can be fitted with modules from various manufacturers in the RFID field. By fitting an antenna and plugging the module into the CPU, the printer can read, write, and verify a variety of RFID smart labels. The Ribbon-Save module, in combination with Toshiba Tech’s floating head technology, can be used to lift the print head over the chip in the label, which reduces the risk of impact damage to the programmed chip, explain company officials. The printers simplify RFID by treating the addition of encoding as another barcode. By selecting the RFID barcode in the Windows driver, or sending the command to the printer as part of a format, the printer will encode the data based on the module fitted and the chip detected.

Printer/Encoder Offers Expanded Connectivity

Zebra Technologies spotlights the R2844-Z, a second-generation 13.56-MHz RFID printer/encoder designed for printing and encoding smart media such as wristbands, smart labels, and smart cards. Supporting a wide range of RFID transponders, the printer/encoder is suited for low-volume printing/encoding applications in the express parcel, pharmaceutical, library book, and video rental, amusement and entertainment, and medical/healthcare markets. The R2844-Z includes advanced connectivity with serial, USB, and parallel ports, plus optional internal Ethernet. Zebra programming language (ZPL) and a 32-bit RISC microprocessor provide high-performance and horsepower, says the manufacturer. Other features include programmable print position for flexible transponder placement, a flash-upgradeable RFID reader/encoder for new RFID protocols, faster print speed with the SH3 processor, and a small footprint to maximize space.
