LABEL APPLICATORS

Applicator, Reader with Patent-Pending Bad-Tag Reject System

Videojet Technologies Inc. and sister company Accu-Sort Systems Inc. make available the Fast Tag RFID tag applicator for packaged goods manufacturers. The offering encodes and applies RFID tags utilizing a Videojet label applicator, an Accu-Sort RFID reader, and a patent-pending reject identification and recovery system. Say company officials, the bad-tag reject system catches quiet tags before they make it to the product and into the supply chain, thus making the offering a cost-effective solution. Fast Tag is a portable, flexible, high-speed solution that supports Class 0/0+ and Class 1 tags, and is EPCglobal upgradeable, say the companies.

System Ejects Bad Labels Before Application

The Kennedy Group’s SmartOne RFID Applicator (Model 1000) was designed in response to customer demand for a means to ensure that bad, or “quiet,” smart labels are ejected before being applied. The applicator combines the ability to identify and eject bad labels with high-speed encoding and application technology. The applicator, with a throughput rate of up to 65 Smart Therm labels per minute, meets in-line encoding and application production requirements of retail, defense, and consumer goods suppliers, say company officials. The company’s Model 2000 offering incorporates a print engine for variable-speed printing. This applicator is capable of verifying, encoding, printing, and applying 45 Smart Therm labels per minute. Both applicators can function with either top or side application, and provide precise placement of Smart Therm labels on pallets and containers, says the Kennedy Group. Each applicator has a user-friendly operator interface, on-board diagnostics, and is made of rugged construction for operation in harsh environments. The applicators support a variety of EPC-compliant Smart Therm label sizes.

Automatic Pallet Labeling Device for UHF-RFID Tags

UPM Rafsec, in collaboration with Sato Deutschland GmbH, announced the creation of the first automatic pallet labeling device for UHF RFID tags, designed for the Nestlé Corporation. Company officials say that the new FlagTag device is a unique, printer-friendly solution designed for the tagging of pallets with just one type of tag. In fact, claim the companies, the device is the only shipping label compatible tagging solution available on the market today that functions virtually for all applications. With this product, Europe’s Metro Group and Nestlé can automatically label pallets of goods intended for Metro with fully functional UHF RFID tags, says UPM Rafsec and Sato.

Printer/Applicator for Top, Bottom and Side Label Applications

ID Technology introduces its new IDT 250r printer/applicator for RFID applications, which offers the ability to read, write, verify, and apply RFID tags in top, bottom, and side label applications, says the manufacturer. Featuring the same modular component configuration as the company’s original IDT 250 series printer/applicator, the IDT 250r printer/applicator also is equipped with hot-swap spare assemblies, which install in minutes, says ID Technology.

RFID Smart Label Service

Weber Marking Systems has established its own RFID service bureau for encoding and imprinting, which makes it possible to obtain compliant RFID smart labels for case and pallet identification. Says the company, due to EPC RFID mandates of retailers and government agencies, many suppliers will not have the option to encode smart labels in house, and will rely upon third parties. The Weber RFID Service Bureau encodes smart labels on UHF RFID transponders embedded in pressure-sensitive smart labels. In-spec encoding is immediately verified to ensure readability, say Weber officials. In addition, the encoding system can also add text, barcodes, and/or graphics utilizing direct thermal or thermal-transfer printing technology. Weber also offers smart labels embedded with EPC-UHF Class 1, 0, and 0+ transponders.

‘Plug-and-Comply’ System Introduced

MPI Label Systems announces its new RFID Plug-and-Comply offering, which was designed in response to demand for a truly integrated “slap-and-ship” RFID labeling solution, says the firm. The modular, scalable, and integrated solution meets EPC compliance directives from major retailers, and can be integrated into a user’s existing space and workflow set-up. The system includes either the 360RW RFID applicator, which validates, writes, and affixes RFID labels in a single process; or the 3600RW RFID label printer/applicator, which is the print-and-apply unit that eliminates the need for pre-printed RFID labels. Both can be incorporated in a scalable and modular conveyor loop system that is customized to fit a customer’s specific needs. The system is deployable in areas as small as 200 square feet, and can be operated by one person, says the manufacturer, adding that familiar industrial components and factory automation systems result in ease of maintenance. The system also provides data in flat file or XML format for ease of integration. Accommodating cases up to 34" in width and/or length, RFID labels are written and affixed at a rate of 10 to 15 cases per minute, with a conveyor speed of 60 feet per minute.

Integrated System Applies, Verifies RFID Tags on Bottles

NJM/CLI Packaging Systems International’s RFID-integrated Auto-Colt III system applies and verifies RFID tags on bottles and other item-level containers using a primary labeler. Says the company, the offering allows pharmaceutical and other manufacturers to more effectively combat counterfeiting and improve track-and-trace capabilities throughout the supply chain, thus achieving a higher level of security and control. In order to meet updated line speeds, NJM/CLI integrates an RFID antenna and a track-and-eject-verification system with its field-proven and easily changeable Auto-Colt III pressure-sensitive labeler to apply and verify pre-encoded RFID tags. After applying the label, the system reads and verifies every tag, and automatically rejects bottles with nonconforming tags from the production line. Round, oval, square, and rectangular containers from 1" to 14" in height and from 5/8" to 7" in diameter at speeds up to 250 cpm can be handled by the Auto-Colt III system, says NJM/CLI. Furthermore, the system has the capability to apply wraparound single- and multi-panel labels.
